What message does my style send regarding moving up in my career? How do I assess the fashion culture in my new workplace if I change jobs or careers?

Joanne Arbuckle
Deputy to the President for Industry Partnerships and Collaborative Programs, Fashion Institute of Technology
The Future of Fashion Education

Joanne Arbuckle is deputy to the president for Industry Partnerships and Collaborative Programs. As the liaison between the president, the college, and outside organizations, she develops and expands partnerships and collaborations nationally and globally for the college. She works closely with the executive director of the FIT/Infor Design and Tech Lab to integrate the work of the lab with the schools and other divisions of the college.

Arbuckle served as dean of the School of Art and Design for over a decade. The school enrolls 4,000 students, has a faculty of 537 full-time and adjunct professors and instructors, and offers 17 majors. As dean, she was responsible for all school operations, departmental development, special programs, fundraising, student enrichment initiatives, and faculty recruitment.

Previously she served for five years as assistant chair of FIT's Fashion Design Department. She became an associate professor in 2002 and a full professor in 2006. In 2003, she won the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

An industry professional with more than 30 years of experience, Arbuckle worked as a designer and merchandiser before becoming president of the fashion-industry consulting firm Design Integrity. She served for seven years on the nominating committee of the prestigious Earnie Awards in children's wear. She has served as a consultant and industry expert witness for law firms on matters concerning the industry, and has participated in interviews for numerous media reports on subjects pertaining to fashion and fashion education.

Arbuckle co-authored the book Historical Dictionary of Fashion and contributed to the Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion.

She earned her Master of Arts in educational administration in higher education from New York University, her Bachelor of Science in fashion design at the State University of New York Empire State College, and her Associate in Applied Science in fashion design at FIT.

Carla Jones

With a bachelor's degree in Public Relations and Advertising from the Villanueva University Center (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and a minor in Fashion Communication and Management, Ms. Jones’ career has been focused on the luxury industry made in Spain with a strong international presence. 

She is currently Director of Communication at Delpozo, a fashion brand that has undergone a recent transformation to establish itself in the global market, showing in New York and also at London Fashion Week. Ms. Jones has taught has taught classes related to fashion shows at the University Center of Villanueva and has given lectures in the ELLE master's degree program at the Complutense University and at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Prior to joining Delpozo, she was with TRIAS, an emerging Spanish brand that showed during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. In 2011 she moved into Loewe’s International Public Relations department.

Melissa Norden
Executive Director, Bottomless Closet

Prior to her appointment as Executive Director at Bottomless Closet, Melissa worked at The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for 13 years, where she was most recently Senior Vice President, Chief of Staff and General Counsel in the Office of the President. She helped found New Yorkers for Clean Livable and Safe Streets (NYCLASS), a nonprofit dedicated to phasing out New York City carriage horses. Prior to joining the ASPCA, Ms. Norden served as counsel to Madison Square Garden, where she collaborated with the management of the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers and the New York Liberty on the Madison Square Garden Cheering for Children Foundation, raising funds for after-school programs for at-risk urban youth. Melissa is a member of the board of directors of Life Vest Inside, a former member of the board and a current member of the Tufts Lawyers Association (TLA), the Tufts Non-Profit Group, the Tufts Women’s Group and the Non-Profit Committee of the American Corporate Counsel Association, as well as a former member of the Committee on Non-Profit Organizations of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Melissa received her Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University, where she was named to the Dean’s List with a double major in American History and Spanish. She has been an alumni interviewer for Tufts University for 20 years. She earned her Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School where she was on The Journal of Law and Policy and received numerous awards for academic achievement. Melissa was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2000.
